Our Wildlife Habitat

Nacho Mom's is proud to sponsor, own, and operate our very own certified wildlife habitat & chicken sanctuary & rescue. It has saved lives for many years..but this was especially true in 2011.   No rain hit this area of Austin for 6 solid months, the city wildlife sanctuaries were booked to capacity, and animals were unable to survive...and even came into suburban neighborhoods trying to find sprinklers, but lawn watering was mostly banned due to the shortage. We felt blessed to see everything from deer to foxes join our habitat last year once dusk fell.

In 2008 we began building our habitat and are still going. This was all hand-built by Nacho Mom herself with animal loving helpers--even the 6 foot deep ponds (allowing frogs to get below ground level to survive the winters), 25 foot stream of filtered but non-chlorinated water, and everything else we are happy to share with you today were built with a labor of love and a whole lot of sweat. Because buying a jar of Nacho Mom's doesn't just feed our pockets...it feeds those who need it far more.

It should be noted that our sanctuary includes chickens: rehabilitating injured hens and roosters, (it is not uncommon for a chicken to emerge from a shell with crippled feet; we take in & teach others how to make them chicken shoes that they LOVE rather than the standard vet suggestion of euthanasia, we work on finding homes for roosters, you'll find baby chicks in brooders, and we house fowl on the endangered or critical list.  We also have taken in hens that have stopped laying so they are no longer found "useful" to others. I particularly love the Silkies...they have no true desire to lay eggs, (they would rather stay broody) but they act like tiny kittens.

Few know that vets are not trained in wildlife or poultry unless they get specialized certification...it helps every animal when someone else steps in to help in any city.

Please...take a tour along our path...

You'll see grapevines growing 15-20 feet up in the air on a metal and wire wall built for the birds to eat with horizontal perches for birds way up high, you'll see rock walls for reptiles to house their young & avoid predators, you'll see streams and ponds we dechlorinate for frogs & tadpoles, you'll see bird houses, bat houses, and butterfly bushes, you'll see native plants that feed the local wildlife and chickens protected from hawks by a run built under a deck and open areas with bird netting...but also a wrought iron play area and coop where they go on lockdown and are  protected from the owls and raccoons who visit the stream at night. And you'll see a painting that honors it all, painted by Nacho Mom.

It is, indeed, our heaven.
Nothing shatters nothing breaks
Nothing hurts and nothing aches
We've got ourselves one helluva place...
... in my heaven.

Looking down at the world below
A bunch of whining, fighting schmos
Up here we've got none of those...
...in my heaven.

There's pools and lakes and hills and mountains
Music, art, and lighted fountains
Who needs bucks here? No one's counting...
...in my heaven.

No one works, we all just play
We pick the weather every day
If you change your mind, well, that's ok...
...in my heaven.

No one's lost and no one's missing
No more parting just hugs and kissing
And all these stars are just for wishing...
...in my heaven.

There's little white lights everywhere
My childhood dog in Dad's old chair
And more memories than my heart can hold
When Eva's singing "Fields of Gold"

There's neighbors, liars and long lost lovers
Villains, poets, babes and mothers
Up here we forgive each other...
...in my heaven.

For every soul that's down there waiting,
Holding on, still hesitating
We say a prayer of levitating...
...in my heaven.

You can look back at your life and lot
But it can't matter what you're not
By the time you're here, we're all we've got

In my heaven
